the coast from us here in california. it was dinner time last night, about 6:15 in san bruno, california, the routine of a normal thursday in the neighborhood was shattered by an explosion so loud it was heard for miles. then came the geyser of flames shooting 300 feet in the air and then the noise. people near the blast zone understandably thought it was an earthquake, a nuclear explosion, perhaps a plane had gone down. turned out to be a natural gas line exploding and a fire that wasn't brought under control until just this afternoon. san bruno is a city of abo 30,000 people, give or take, just south of san francisco, just west of that city's airport, sfo. federal investigators have converged on the neighborhood where the gas main blew up. we begin our broadcast tonight from the scene. our own kristen welker and miguel almaguer are there for us. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the blast has already been called a state of emergency. this city reeling from an explosion so powerful it claimed lives and forever charred the landscape here. as day broke in a neighborhood not

morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. federal investigators and the people who survived the san bruno blast will return to the nabd this morning looking for the same thing. answers to how could this happen. we have live team coverage today in the bay's bob redell has a story of the people who live there and lost so much but we begin with christy smith with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you. you know, ntsb investigators are beginning their work but they have already met with pg&e for sometime and they asked for an extensive history of this pipeline. things like excavation work around it that may have perhaps damaged it. but they say it will take time to get to the bottom of why this pipeline exploded and the fire that followed it leveled a neighborhood. here's what we know t. 30-inch gas pipeline was installed in 1956. investigators will send part to a lab in washington, d.c. for analysis. the toll is staggering, four dead, 52 people injured, seven people hospitalized with critical burns and there are still three homes left to search. if it's cool enough dogs w

for us down there, susan.in >> reporter: i think as things wind down or certainly as the city wakes up, you are seeing more and more people who are in this area, people who obviously have made a conscious decision to want to be as close as they can to the ceremony. so you are seeing not only family members who attend theer ceremony being here and some who are escorted in but other relatives who come from the area who come in on their own to attend the ceremony every year. we are also hearing church bells ringing as they have throughout the morning during various points of the ceremony as well. that adds to the emotion of the moment. we also talked to police commissioner, ray kelly, about this morning. he told me, new yorkers, in particular, are very resilient. y, they feel the pain of what happened and every day, he also said, it is in the back of everyone's mind what happened on that fateful day. people here remain mindful that something might happen again. he said in the future but he insisted that new yorkers are ready for whatever might lie ahead. certain certainly, the city has ta

which i would prefer, if they believe there's a moral equivalency there or they don't and they're using it for political purposes. either way, whichever it is, it's not just bad domestic politics for the president, and it is for a variety of reasons including it takes him off the economy and divides the democrats on a range of issues. but i almost resist talking about this as a political issue. this is a national security crisis.f both of these issues are. you have general petraeus getting involved in that domestic matter of the first amendment issue shows the extraordinary extent to which people in the military are -- men and women overseas think this is a big deal. and to have it to be brought into domestic politics and inflamed by republicans, again, out of principle, maybe, out of political purposes maybe, whatever the reason is really a national and international tragedy. and unfortunately the president, foa variety of reasons, is too weak on his own to deal with it. >> i think you're right. >> this is so rare to say here's my religious faith, i have to put it out as a shield. here
